Cholla Special Needs Community Campus
In 2010, STARS established the Cholla Special Needs Community Campus in North Scottsdale. STARS and Scottsdale Unified School District are enhancing their partnership of transitioning students with special needs from high school to post-school life with the new Special Needs Community Campus. On the campus STARS offers their traditional Adult Day Programs, Work Centers, Supported Employment Opportunities, as well as:
- Community Resource Center (CRC) - the CRC will help young adults and their families access the tools needed to obtain vocational opportunities, as well as, the appropriate adult services. The CRC is also home to STARS’ Community Workshops which cover a variety of topics helpful to parents and guardians of teens and adults with developmental disabilities. The CRC is complete with books, games and other valuable resources for caregivers and parents, along with computers and staff to help through the transition process.
- Young Adult Transition Training Program (YATTP) - YATTP is Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) funded after-school program for youth age 14 through completion of high school. This is an intensive, structured work preparation program that targets soft-skills (grooming, punctuality, getting along with others, etc.) in small group instruction.
- Transitions Program - for students in special education, this program provides services to youth and families in need of a stepping stone between school and post-school life. A full-time staff member is available to assist students and their families through this process; helping to understand benefits, resources and services available. This program is targeting youth who are eligible for DDD and Vocational Rehabilitation services.
The Campus is also home to the SUSD PANDA preschool program for children with special needs, the Miracle League of Arizona fully-adaptive baseball field, along with additional health and wellness services planned for the campus.
The ultimate goal for the Cholla Special Needs Community Campus is offering comprehensive programs and services to span all ages. This Campus will be the “Cradle to Grave” for individuals with disabilities and their families who live in and around the Scottsdale area.
