STARS’ concern and commitment to improving the lives of individuals with disabilities is evident throughout our 37-year history. Beginning with just one small program, STARS has grown to meet the needs of participants living in Scottsdale and beyond.
1973: Arizona Foundation for the Handicapped and the Scottsdale Foundation for the Handicapped forged a collaborative service contract with their Board of Directors. The first of its kind in Arizona.
1973: Las Madrinas, or the Godmothers, 80-member auxiliary was formed, laying the foundation for STARS. They are considered the founders of the agency.
1974: The first STARS Work Center opened at the JayCee Clubhouse, now the Scottsdale Stadium.
1977: Plans for a residential facility, the Villa de Las Madrinas, were underway with the ASU architecture and interior design departments adopting it as their special Project.

1980: STARS moved to its current headquarters at 7507 E. Osborn Road and began offering Day Programs in addition to the Work Center.
1982: Villa de Las Madrinas opened its doors at 1350 N. 77th Street with 16 participants gaining housing and supportive services.
1995: The enclave at Fry’s, where many participants work, is established.
1999: The second Work Center opened in north Scottsdale.
2001: STARS is awarded the prestigious Sterling Award from the Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce.
2004: Scottsdale Foundation for the Handicapped (SFH) adopted its new name, Scottsdale Training & Rehabilitation Services, or STARS.
2008: In partnership with local photographer Mark Lypnski, STARS establishes Shoot for the STARS, a creative photography program. Since then, participant photography has been featured in art shows in Phoenix and Scottsdale.
2009: Founding Madrina Mary King receives the Frances Young Community Award.
2009: Arizona Builders Alliance, along with 90 volunteer participating companies, completely remodeled the Osborn site at a value of $300,000.
STARS has entered a new era. The experienced and passionate executive team, Board of Directors and staff are committed to growing and moving the organization forward to better serve the participants and the community.
