Las Madrinas

The founding ‘Godmothers’ of STARS, Las Madrinas, have remained primary supporters of the mission of the organization and have provided invaluable support throughout the years.

Mary King, one of the original Las Madrinas heroes, and a group of other passionate supporters worked with the City of Scottsdale in the early 70’s to establish the Scottsdale Foundation for the Handicapped, now known as STARS. Since 1972, King has not only continued her involvement with STARS but has also continued working with school-aged children and adults with developmental disabilities. She has logged thousands of hours in volunteer service to STARS, and today she is serves on both the Board of Directors and the President of Las Madrinas. King has remained a strong advocate for the developmentally and intellectually challenged by her desire she the world that everyone has gifts and talents to share. In her own words: “We teach them to count change; they teach us to count blessings.”

“As you mature in life, you become more acutely aware of those who seem to be less blessed than you. You feel empathy for those less fortunate and then you realize that they are blessed with extremely special gifts. Those of laughter, love for simplicity and order and great artistic talent. STARS participants are truly a gift to us all and the work of STARS and my involvement on the Board has given me a new and wonderful perspective on what’s important in life.”
– Wendy Lyons, Board of Directors

“My involvement with STARS is important because I truly believe STARS helps people make a difference in their lives. And, it’s a difference that you can actually see and it’s for a group of people who really need an organization like STARS to help them make a difference in their lives. To be involved with an organization that can say that and back it up every single day is an honor and a privilege for me.”
– Tim Clements, Board of Directors
