Sheltered Employment:

The Work Center

The agency’s sheltered employment program provides people with disabilities with a fully functioning workplace through which they perform contract services and receive regular paychecks. The work center is itself a self-sufficient program which contracts with private and public sector companies to perform specific types of work. The work center currently contracts with Cox Communications, the Arizona Office of Tourism, US West Communications, Motorola, and a number of other organizations to provide bulk mailing, assembly and disassembly piece work, labeling, and sorting.

The work center is a highly active and charged environment. The staff provides specific skills training for contract performance and designs simple mechanical aids and jigs to allow the consumers to perform work effectively. Those working in the work center have regular work days and hours and follow the procedures required of any employee. These workers often require higher levels of supervision and specific training as well as adaptive aids which keep them from competitive employment. They do, however, succeed in exercising their independence and self-sufficiency through the work center environment.

The work center provides employment training and opportunities for people with disabilities and operates as a for-profit subsidiary of the agency. Revenue generated from work center contracts is used to pay the workers, to operate and re-invest in the work center business, and to generate funds for the programs at the agency.

The work center can perform large-scale piece rate work and will provide a detailed bid for work within its capabilities. If your business has piece work needs such as collating, packaging, sorting, or bulk mailing, please consider having that work done by the agency.
