STARS is a home-grown agency for change located in the heart of Scottsdale, Arizona. Founded in 1973, STARS has been improving the lives of individuals with developmental and cognitive disabilities for 51 years! Through STARS programs, adults with all ranges of abilities find opportunities and assistance to reach new goals such as community connection, skills development, and financial independence. Operating as one of the first agencies in the Scottsdale area, and founded by parents of adult children with disabilities, STARS is an integral part of the spirit of philanthropy and inclusivity in this community.
“Chris has been at STARS for 31 years and plans to be here for another 30 years. STARS has had a major impact on his life, he loves it here!” – Guardian of a CommunityWork Participant
STARS understands that everyone is different! Our programs are designed to meet a wide array of needs:
- Day Training for Adults (DTA) provides structure and oversight for individuals who are often challenged to understand boundaries and continuity. It offers a social network for otherwise marginalized individuals with few options for connecting with others and provides a framework wherein members learn socially acceptable behaviors, strengthen independence through life-skills activities and hands-on practice, and receive community integration through outings and volunteer opportunities.
- CommunityWork engages participants in compensated tasks for various non-profit and corporate partners, including the specialized cleaning of remotes and cables for redistribution for Cox Enterprises and the assembly of welcome packets for Hospice of the Valley.
- Competitive Integrated Employment (CIE) prepares job-ready individuals for fully inclusive independent employment opportunities using a multi-phase model including discovery, readiness, and job placement. The program champions work-based learning and on-the-job coaching.
- Community Based Employment (CBE) is a comprehensive initiative with two distinct programs. CBE provides support for participants throughout their employment journey. The Independent Employment Support (ISE) program offers extensive assistance during their first year. Seamlessly transitioning from ISE, participants enter the Employment Support Aid (ESA) program, which delivers ongoing support without a predetermined end date.
“I’m most proud of what STARS and the participants have done for this community. We’re just a framework, while the participants radiate love and happiness within the community.”
– Mary King, Founder
Standing apart from other agencies, STARS offers transportation to and from all of its programs for any participant who needs it. This is a critical service and has helped over 60% of STARS center-based participants remain at STARS.
In order to continue providing this exemplary service, STARS has launched a fundraising initiative to support its transportation department. Funds from this campaign will help to ensure the accessibility of STARS programs to all current and future members.
