Dear STARS Families & Friends,

As we step into FY26, I’m excited to share a fresh chapter in STARS’ journey—one centered on connection, collaboration, and a stronger, more unified culture.

The past year brought its share of challenges. From navigating a state funding shortfall to strengthening our internal financial position, we’ve had to make tough decisions while keeping our focus on stability and sustainability. Thanks to the dedication of our team and the support of our community, we’re starting this year on stronger footing—ready to grow, innovate, and serve our participants with even greater impact.

A New Chapter in Culture at STARS:

We are reimagining how we work together—not just as colleagues, but as one STARS family. This means breaking down silos, spending more time connecting in person, and creating opportunities for every department to learn from and support one another.

As an example of this culture shift, our day-to-day practices are changing.  As an example of this shift, instead of routine virtual monthly meetings, all members of our Leadership Team will be heading out into our programs each month for program spotlights—experiencing the work firsthand, connecting with staff and participants, and seeing our mission in action. Highlights include:

  • August – Spotlighting CommunityWork: Leadership Team members will lunch with participants, then shadow them through their work shift to learn more from participants and CommunityWork employees firsthand.
  • September – Spotlighting DTA: STARS leaders will attend the much-anticipated DTA Talent Show to cheer on staff and participants.
  • October – Spotlighting Community-Based Employment: STARS leaders will visit job seekers and coaches in the field to see our community-based employment programs in action.
  • November – STARS Team Building: STARS leaders will engage in an off-site volunteer activity and team-building event to reconnect outside the STARS bubble.

Beyond these spotlights, we’ll be adding more volunteer activities, monthly challenges, and Spirit Weeks for our employees—fun and meaningful ways to strengthen our connections, all spearheaded by one of our newest Executive Team Members, Lindsay Henning, Director of Operations.

Welcoming Samantha “Sam” Mason – Director of Workforce Solutions:

We’re also thrilled to welcome Sam Mason to our Executive Team. Sam brings over 15 years of experience serving the IDD community, including seven years leading Adaptive Recreation for the City of Tempe, where she managed DDD contracts, oversaw Special Olympics programs, and led a citywide Autism Certification effort. Her expertise in employment services, community partnerships, and inclusive programming will be invaluable as we expand our Workforce Solutions portfolio to create more opportunities for participants to thrive in the workplace.

Why This Matters

We want to have the most joyful, collaborative team possible to serve your loved ones. A workplace where staff feel connected, supported, and inspired is one where creativity flourishes, energy stays high, and collaboration comes naturally. This culture change isn’t just about improving how we work together internally—it’s about creating the best possible environment for the people we serve.

When our team members feel valued and engaged, they bring that same positivity and dedication into every interaction with participants and families. It shows up in the way they problem-solve, how they celebrate successes, and how they go the extra mile to make each day meaningful. A connected, collaborative team is better equipped to deliver the person-centered, innovative services that define STARS—and to keep raising the bar for what’s possible in the lives of those we serve.

Thank you for being part of our journey. Your support ensures we can keep building a future where individuals with IDD have every opportunity to shine.

With Gratitude,

Claudia Chavez, STARS Executive Director
