Introducing Alex Duarte

Our DTA Program Manager

We’re thrilled to introduce our new Manager of Day Training for Adults (DTA) Program, Alexandra “Alex” Duarte! Let’s take a closer look at Alex’s journey and her inspiring vision for empowering individuals with developmental disabilities (I/DD).

Passionate Advocate Since High School

Hailing from the sunny state of California, Alex’s passion for advocating for individuals with developmental disabilities started early on. Inspired by her experiences in the Best Buddies program during high school, she became dedicated to ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability, has access to quality education and opportunities for growth.

Teacher at Heart

Alex pursued her passion further at Northern Arizona University, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Special Education. Currently, she’s continuing her educational journey with a Master’s in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) at Arizona State University. Her commitment to learning reflects her dedication to providing the best support and guidance to those she serves.

Having previously worked as an educator specializing in teaching life skills to high schoolers with special needs, Alex understands the unique challenges of supporting individuals as they transition into adulthood. Her journey led her to STARS, where she was drawn to our unwavering commitment to serving adults with I/DD, recognizing that “everybody loves working with kids, but kids grow up and the community is still here”.

Bringing Magic to Life

Now leading our DTA program, Alex is diving into a phase of listening, learning, and absorbing the culture to enhance the experience for participants. With a focus on treating DTA participants with dignity and respect, Alex aims to empower them to make independent decisions and embrace their individuality fully, understanding that “they are adults and are entitled to be treated like adults”.

For Alex, leading the DTA program isn’t just a job—it’s her dream role. She envisions it as a space where participants can be themselves, socialize, set personal and group goals, and explore their creativity in a supportive environment, all with the belief that “you create the world around you.” through a diverse range of activities and vocational training, Alex aims to equip participants with the skills they need to thrive both personally and professionally.

Join us in celebrating her dedication to making each day brighter for those she serves. Together, we’re creating a community where everyone feels valued to reach their fullest potential, guided by Alex’s belief that “life is good, and I want our participants to thrive in it.” Alex feels it is very important to bring that magic to life, and her passion shines through in everything she does for the DTA program.
