As a STARS stakeholder – whether a subscriber of the Shooting Star, volunteer board member, CommunityWork community partner, CIE community partner, parent or guardian, resident or employee of the City of Scottsdale, grant – funding foundation, corporation, individual donor, STARS team member, or advocate for the thousands of individuals with life-long intellectual and developmental disabilities – 2023 should serve as a year to remember for as long as your memory serves you.

Why? Because 2023 is the year STARS reached a milestone of extraordinary significance, celebrating 50 years of providing programs and individualized support for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities (I/DD).

Contrary to the lyrics of Barbara Streisand’s song The Way We Were, released as a single in the same year as the organization’s founding, STARS will forever be a memory of the way we are, for since inception STARS has always been – and will always be – a safe, caring and compassionate oasis for people with I/DD who want to improve their self-care, self-advocacy, and economic self-sufficiency.

Families seeking support from STARS can explore three distinct pathways. We extend our services to individuals eligible for Vocational Rehabilitation or the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) programs. Additionally, we offer assistance to families interested in a private pay option, ensuring a comprehensive array of choices to address diverse needs. This approach demonstrates our unwavering commitment to our participants, recognizing and respecting the varied circumstances and eligibility criteria of those seeking our assistance.

Our diverse programs are meticulously designed to create a positive and lasting impact. Below is a recap of our 6 programs offered in 2023.

It’s both an honor and a privilege to serve in leadership at STARS, where the future is bright and the demand for quality services for the needs of our participants and their families abounds. As with any nonprofit, we are faced with many challenges. Our mission to improve the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and each day we seek opportunities to do so.

Fifty years is a significant achievement and celebrating the historic occasion in the company of the organization’s founder, Mary King, was nothing short of spectacular. It was truly a memorable night of wonderful food, beautiful friends, and dancing – lots of dancing! You can read more about the 50th Anniversary Fiesta here.

While committed to honoring our past, we are focused on an ambitious future which emphasizes innovation in providing employment and other supportive opportunities for job seekers and site-based participants. Outstanding program leadership and generous grant awards from local funding partners underscore the multifaceted approach to advancing STARS. These efforts not only contribute to the betterment of participants’ lives but also indicate a dedication to creating a positive and impactful difference in the community.
